About our Speakers:

Julie Bélanger has been working in Retail and Hospitality for over 30 years. She is currently Director of Operation for Sodexo Canada, overseeing a portfolio of Food and Facility Management services in Ottawa, the GTA as well as Western Provinces. Prior to working with Sodexo, she worked in hospitality and she was a Hotel General Manager for 10 years with Marriott, Starwood and IHG brands. More recently, Julie performed the duties of HR Business Partner for Sodexo where her operational experience was put to good use in Developing talent.

Sodexo Canada employs over 8000 employees in various sectors including Corporate Offices, hospitals, universities, and remote sites such as mining camps. The company was founded over 55 years ago in France and is present in over 75 countries, employing over 400 000 people.

Julie will talk to us about recruiting and retention – and how retention starts at the interview and continues through the whole employment process.

Ken McCarthy is the President of Integrity by McCarthy inc. Ken retired from the Canadian Public Service in 2020 and created Integrity by McCarthy Inc. to raise the bar in how organizations deal with matters of workplace harassment, violence, wrongdoing and fraud. He has seen the devastating consequences on individuals and organizations and set out to make a difference. Ken has led a workplace investigation program for a workforce of over 15,000 employees. He has also provided executive oversight in more than 500 workplace investigations and has designed and delivered investigation training sessions to 500 front-line managers. Ken is based in Ottawa, Ontario.

Integrity by McCarthy Inc. is a Barrhaven based family business that helps leaders protect their reputations, their organizations, and their employees by creating proactive solutions and prevention strategies for workplace harassment, violence, wrongdoing, and fraud.

Ken will talk to us about workplace harassment and violence prevention. Did you know 90% of potential employees research the culture of a company before accepting a role? Did you know that up to 30% of hospitality workers will not return to their jobs because of past sexual harassment by customers, managers and coworkers?

If you want to attract and retain great workers, you need to have a stellar reputation as an employer.

A visible commitment to harassment and violence prevention is your first step in setting yourself apart from your competitors and in making your business attractive to the best talent.

As well tarnishing your reputation, workplace harassment and violence incidents can also lead to:

  • High staff turnover – employees leaving a troubled working environment for somewhere else
  • Absenteeism – employees not coming into work due to avoid harassment and violence
  • Presenteeism – employees becoming disillusioned with their jobs and only doing the bare minimum in work, or not working and simply putting up a front of working
  • Employee burnout – mentally-exhausted employees can lead to all kinds of problems, including further harassment and violence incidents!
